The hornbill is one of the most iconic species in the tropical rainforest of Borneo (Sabah and Sasrawak, Malaysia). We have been fortunate to see different species of hornbills during our time in Asia. The Iban tribe (biggest tribe of Sarawak) calls this bird Kenyalang and has an important role in ceremonies. Creating a lot of texture and painted with Amsterdam & Amsterdam Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens on 50 x 60 cm stretched canvas and mounted in a floating frame making the picture 55 x 65 cm in total.
This sculpture is made from old news papers, card board and recycling materials. It's inspired by all the underwater creators I have seen during my diving trips. Like the pufferfish (Tetraodontiformes) who inflates themselves when threatened and the related porcupine fish; which also possess spines; behave in the same way. Some well-known species include Fugu rubrics and Tetraodon nigroviridis. It is approximate 20 - 25 cm) and painted with Amsterdam / Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens.
Badak literally means rhinoceros in Indonesian and Malay. I think rhinoceroses are magnificent animals, and it is sad that many of these beautiful creatures are threatened with extinction. During the time I lived in Borneo, I had the opportunity to see the last white rhinoceros in Sabah—unfortunately in captivity—at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. Luckily some others are still alive in the wild. Painted with Amsterdam & Amsterdam Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens on 60 x 60 cm stretched canvas. Note: this painting is not framed but possible to hang without frame as the sides are painted too. However I have ordered some frames and might update the painting soon with a floating frame.
While being in Spain during the winter (escaping the cold in the Netherlands) we would take a stroll around the big lake in Calpe where we could see hundreds of flamingos. This inspired me to try to paint one of these beautiful birds. The official Papiamento name is Chogogo. The sound name chogogo is a so-called onomatopoeia: the word is based on the typical, honking sound that flamingos make. Painted with Amsterdam & Amsterdam Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens on 50 x 70 cm stretched canvas. Note: this painting is not framed. But possible to hang without frame as the sides are painted too.
I always adored elephants and during my years living in Asia we would search for the pigmy elephants that live around the Kinabatangan river. Sealing on the river in little boats hoping to see them when they come to the river to drink. Leaf veins are used to give the painting texture and is painted with Amsterdam & Amsterdam Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens on 50 x 60 cm stretched canvas. Note: this paining is not framed! But possible to hang without frame as the sides are painted too.

Another Sabah memory: a warrior performing a dance using the bamboo sticks. It's a great memory from our days in Borneo (Sabah, Malaysia). Made it to take back home to the Netherlands where it is hanging in my house but now it is time to let it go and make place for other / new art work. This painting on 90 x 60 cm stretched canvas. Painted with Amsterdam & Amsterdam Expert acrylics and varnish from Royal Talens. Note: the painting is not framed but possible to hang without frame as the sides are painted too.
